    Finally a Great Litter!
This litter checks ALL the boxes for our household! After trying many different brands, prices, and types of litter that did not live up to their claims regarding absorbency, odor control, scent, tracking, dust, well everything, THIS litter keeps its promises! Shortly after getting my cats last fall I began dealing with chronic respiratory issues, I had to wear a mask when changing, stirring, scooping or adding to the litter in our cat box because no matter their claims, ALL the other litters either made a cloud of dust when changing or adding, or left a fine coat of dust on everything in the house. Not with this litter. It truly is dust free, or at least undetectable! I bought a tracking mat because all of the other litters made such a mess all over the house when the cats carried it with them, even with a top entry litter box which is great for minimizing tracking, btw, but with this litter I hardly find any pellets in the mat, or anywhere else! And if my dog happens to find a stray one and eats it (yeah, she does that), it won’t hurt her because it is non-toxic!! It makes nice, solid clumps that can be scooped and flushed or deposited in a receptacle of your choice, so it completely captures the urine, and makes it easy to dispose of. I always scoop out the number 2 as soon as I’m aware of it, because let’s face it, cat poop stinks!! No litter is going to eliminate that! So I just get it out of there as soon as I notice it, or at least once or twice a day when it’s convenient. The litter itself has no real scent of it’s own, unlike corn, clay, or pine litters, or even “unscented” crystals. The small pellets fall easily through my scoop that has rectangular slots, and they are not hard on your feet if you do happen to step on one that gets away. Both of my somewhat fussy kitties took to it right away, after just a few minutes of curios exploring. No gradual transition was necessary. I know this is long, but I just can’t say enough about how happy I am to have finally found this litter!!! Soooo glad I decided to give it a try after almost giving up and resigning to the fact that I was going to have tracking, dust, and a stinky litter box with granules or pellets that would make me or my pets sick. I bought the pack of 2 and put them both in the large litter box that my 2 cats share, and that makes it plenty deep enough for them to dig and bury even if there are still clumps in there before I get to them. I will buy the 2 pack again and just add one of them when needed to keep it at a good depth. Since the urine is completely captured in clumps, it doesn’t seep down to the bottom like with other litters, so no need to have to completely empty and replace the litter as often, and will be easier to clean when it does need it, which also makes it VERY AFFORDABLE, compared to many of the others I’ve tried that say they last a month before changing, which I certainly did not find to be the case with a single one of them! I can’t find one thing negative to say about this litter and recommend it 100%!!!

The best cat litter I’ve used
About me: I have been rescuing feral cats for 20+ years, finding homes for the ones that are adoptable, giving a home to the ones that aren’t. For most of that time I’ve had between 10 and 14 cats living full-time in the house. I’ve tried and/or used countless cat products – food, litter, toys, furniture – and have tried several natural cat litters made from corn, wheat, pine, walnut shells, and a couple others I don’t remember. I’ve been using the corn-based “Worlds Best Cat Litter” used for comparison in this review for over 15 years because it performs the best where it matters most. However, the dust and tracking that comes with it has kept me looking for something better in that regard. I recently tried the Fukumaru litter.Since switching litter would be a major effort, I decided to thoroughly evaluate their litter with a side-by-side comparison of the two. I switched the litter in one of the boxes in a group of four, so there would be three other boxes with the litter they knew, if there was anything they didn’t like about the new one. I rated this litter on Scent, Acceptance, Clumping, Sifting, Odor Control, and Dust & Tracking. Cutting straight to the chase, it’s the best cat litter I’ve ever used.Scent: Excellent. I love how this stuff smells – very pleasant. But the scent is light enough that you don’t even notice it unless you’re down close to the box while cleaning it. That’s how it should be, you don’t want the room taking on the smell of the litter, even if it is pleasant. It also doesn’t seem to bother the cats at all. Fukumaru confirmed that this is the natural scent of the ingredients, there is no added fragrance. WBCL also has a light, pleasant, natural scent.Acceptance: Excellent. There have been no issues with the cats accepting this new litter. It sits right next to three other boxes with the litter they know, so if there was something they didn’t like, they would easily just use a different box. But the Fukumaru litter was used within a few hours of making the change, and two of the three other boxes were unused, so whichever cat it was either had a preference for it or didn’t care. It has been used every day, sometimes two or three times between cleanings. I clean all the boxes twice a day, so the Fukumaru litter being used more than once in a 12 hour period when there are 11 other boxes available, says to me that at least some of the cats prefer it.Clumping: Excellent. In my experience, WBCL sets the standard for clumping among natural litters. Fukumaru comes very close and is the best of any other litter I’ve tried. As a test, I deliberately under-filled the box, using only one bag, to a depth of about two inches. I wanted to see what happened when the clumps stuck to the bottom. Because invariably there will be a cat that digs all the way to the bottom, or pees next to the side of the box, causing the clump to stick to the box. This is where every other natural litter I’ve tried has failed – when you have to break the clump loose from the bottom or side of the box. The clumps break into pieces and some of the used litter slips through the scoop and remains in the box.But not Fukumaru. Just like WBCL, a gentle nudge with the back side of the scoop is all that’s needed to free the clump from the bottom/side and in most cases they remain fully intact. Sometimes pieces will break off during sifting if a clump has an irregular shape, but even they stay intact and no used litter gets back into the box. I rate the clumping a 9 out of 10, with WBCL being the 10. I would rate any of the others I’ve tried no better than a 5.Sifting: Good. This is the one area where it is not on par with granular litters. The elongated tofu pieces don’t slip as easily through the slots in the scoop and it takes more time shaking the scoop to get the pieces to fall through. It’s not bothersome, but it does take noticeably longer for the clean litter to fall through the scoop before discarding the clump. I have a large scoop, aluminum, long slots in the head for the litter to sift through. I’ve seen some scoops that use a cross-hatch pattern for the openings, resulting in much smaller openings that are OK (although slower) for granular litters, but simply would not work with the elongated tofu pieces. Users of this litter must use a scoop with long slotted openings.Odor control: Superior. Again, in my experience, WBCL has set the standard for urine odor control – until now. I was introduced to it through an in-store demo in which WBCL completely eliminated the odor from ammonia water that was poured onto it in a test tube. Everything else I tried since fell short except Fukumaru – it is every bit as good. I brought a clump I had just removed from the box up close and sniffed it – no urine smell at all, just the scent of the litter. It completely eliminates urine odor and you can’t get any better than that. It’s hard to say how it does on fecal odor, I would have to test it by itself in a separate room so see if there’s any difference. But in my experience, no litter can eliminate fecal odor, they can only cover it up with heavy fragrance. The litter can’t go to work on the source of the odor the way it does when it absorbs the urine. My solution to fecal odor is just keeping the boxes clean.Dust and Tracking: Superior – the best I’ve seen. For all of its good qualities, WBCL is terrible in this regard. Their claim of ‘99% dust-free” is a marketing gimmick that sounds good but is meaningless in practice. Years ago when I first started using it, the sun was shining through a window as I was cleaning a group of boxes and I could see so much fine dust in the air being illuminated by the sunlight it made me want to hold my breath. Since then I’ve worn a dust mask when cleaning the boxes. Cleaning 12 of them twice a day, I just don’t want to breathe that much dust. There is a bookcase at the end of a row of boxes and within a few weeks of cleaning it, there is a visible layer of fine yellow dust on it. Dark-furred cats exit the boxes looking like they’re wearing yellow socks from the dust stuck to their legs. The granules track out of the litter box so much that every time I clean the boxes, I start by vacuuming the mats that the boxes sit on, the surrounding carpet, and the pathways between the door and the boxes. Once a day, before the evening cleaning, I vacuum the hardwood floor in the hallway that connects the three “litter rooms” to get the litter that has tracked out that far. It causes a lot of extra work. Just want you to know the baseline for this comparison. The Fukumaru litter is amazing in this regard. I saw no dust at all when I poured it into the box. I see no dust being stirred up when I clean the box. No dust on the cats’ feet when they exit the box. Tracking – again, almost nothing. Sometimes there are a few pieces on the mat or carpet just outside the box, but nothing farther out onto the carpet, never mind the hallway. It seems to fall off their feet immediately upon stepping out of the box and never ends up anywhere else. Kudos to them for solving these two very annoying issues! The first of the attached pics is just prior to starting the vacuuming/cleaning process. You can see dust and granules from the WBCL all over the mat the boxes are sitting on, but in front of the Fukumaru box (far right), only a few granules and no dust. I went to another room after vacuuming the mat and carpet and while I was away, one of the cats came in and used the Fukumaru box. In the second pic you can see what he tracked out as he was leaving – a few pieces around the front of the box and a couple more on the carpet, and that is it. With this litter I would need to vacuum only once a day and far less square footage at that. In four weeks of using this, I haven’t found a single piece out in the hallway. All this superior performance does come at a cost. It is significantly more expensive than WBCL and most of the other natural litters I tried. But when researching natural litters offered by various online stores, there are a couple other premium litters, including one also made of tofu, that were in this price range, so Fukumaru is not alone in this regard. With one or two boxes, the price difference, spread out over time, is easy to absorb. With 12 boxes, the calculus is a little different. But it has the potential to save so much work, I’m looking at how to adjust my cat care budget so I can switch to it. Very highly recommended.

Mix with Silica Cat Litters for Even Better Performance and Value
Our favorite litter by far, as the quality is fantastic compared to other tofu litters we’ve tried. The only reason we ever buy any other brand is price. We like this over clay and other alternative litters because it is very low dust and hardly tracks beyond the immediate vicinity of the litter box. The applewood formula is our favorite, as it is mostly unscented and seems to control odor better than the other formulas. With that said, this litter isn’t perfect–used alone, it can cake on the bottom of the litter box (which thankfully is still easy to clean, unlike with clay litters) and smell of ammonia after a few days. We’ve fixed the absorbency issues, eliminated ammonia smells, and stretched the longevity and value of this litter by adding cheap, unscented silica crystal cat litter at about a 3:2 ratio. (Silica is NOT flushable but we don’t flush the litter anyway.) Silica alone never worked out for us, but with the tofu and silica mixed together, we now have litter that is always dry, comes cleanly off the pan, lasts for weeks, is low dust, doesn’t track, and is easy to scoop!

Clumps easily and not messy to clean up at all. My cat loves it.Odorless so I don’t have to hide my cat box when I have visitors.
