A heaven sent for my arthitic dog with ACL repairs! – 3 years later it STILL is!
Original review 9/2013:I own a 100 lb Rottweiler who has had ACL tears in both back legs which both required surgery. Its been a year since his 2nd surgery but with combined knee injuries, he has some pretty severe arthritis already, which I’m told will only get worse with age. As a result he has a hard time resting and it is very obvious when he’s sleeping that he’s just not comfortable. He spends ALL night up-down, up-down, tossing and turning and wandering around the room and in the morning he’s clearly very sore and stiff. I’ve only had the Big Barker bed for about a month now, but so far ALL of these issues have been eliminated. He sleeps through the night now; no more tossing and turning, no more up-downs or pacing the room and in the morning he gets up, stretches and moves on – no more a.m. limping and obvious soreness! He’s “brighter”, happier and has a lot more energy! Good sleep is a wonderful thing, even for dogs!I’ve owned several orthopedic beds in the past, all costing over $100 each and I’ve gone through 5 of them in 5 years. They always flatten out in the middle, which is clearly why the poor dog is so uncomfortable. This bed is expensive, yes and cost was a major concern for me too, but I rationalized that I’ve already spent $500 on other beds and I have nothing to show for it what do I REALLY have to lose by trying this one? Part of my decision to purchase Big Barker was their “no flattening” guarantee. I felt the product MUST be good if they were willing to offer such a lengthy warranty. You DO get what you pay for. This bed is not even in the same class as the others I’ve owned before. It is FAR superior and it should last my dog for the rest of his life.My dog took to the bed right away and he loves the headrest. The cover is easy to remove and is made of a quality material. The zippers seem pretty solid/sturdy. The foam does not have any kind of a funky smell or that god-awful chemical stink that most foams do. In fact, it really doesn’t have much of an odor at all. It’s firm and supportive, but not rigid like a board. I laid on it and could not feel the floor under me, even when rolling over. The seller was great and took the time to inquire later if I received my product on time and in a condition I was pleased with and wanted to make sure I was happy. A step above and beyond!I am hoping to write another review in a year or so to update on how Big Barker has held up over time, but after a month it has been a God-send in this household! Thanks Big Barker, you’ve made me and my dog VERY happy!UPDATE 11/2/2016: BIG BARKER 3 YEARS LATERI’ve had Big Barker (which is used a minimum of 8 hours a day) for just over three years now I am very happy and somewhat amazed to report, that this bed is still in the exact same condition as when I bought it. There is not even a hint of a sag in it. The foam is not wearing down, even on the edges. It’s not peeling, crumbling, separating or falling apart. The cover has been extremely durable. No frayed, split or stretched seams anywhere on it. No splitting or weakening of the zippers and they still run completely smooth. I have washed the cover many times and it has remained in perfect shape, the color hasn’t even faded. I have the headrest version, so when putting the cover back on you do have to wrestle with it a little bit, but I think that’s to be expected if you want a cover that won’t stretch out or tear. Like others I have noticed some static electricity from the cover at times, mostly in the dry winter months but I think the build up on the blankets I put on it is probably worse than that from the cover itself. I keep a sheet or blanket on the bed for cleanliness but that aside, my dog still loves the bed even without sheets on it. I’m sure the sheets help, but I am surprised to notice that the foam hasn’t absorbed “doggie odor” either, so I don’t have that nasty dog bed stink smelling up my bedroom.Oh how I wish I would have bought this bed first and no other bed! I wish I would have not thought a different ortho type bed was going to be “good enough” and chose them because they were cheaper. I’ve had the other beds – 5 other ones to be exact. All of them flattened out in the center within months, failing my wallet and causing my dog pain. Have you ever slept on a cruddy mattress? Its MISERABLE! My dog was too, but he’s not anymore after this bed. I know that sounds cheesy but its true! My dog is 9 years old now and everyone comments how he does not act like an old dog at all. He’s bouncy, energetic and “cheery” and I know a HUGE component to his energy level is the fact that he has had consistent quality sleep for years now since finding this bed. I know this bed eases his pain because if he’s having a sore leg day (limping from too much activity) he heads to it immediately and only wants to be on this bed. If you have a dog with ANY kind of joint problems, arthritis or dysplasia, help them – buy them this bed! You WILL notice a difference and they WILL feel better! IT IS WORTH THE MONEY! It is high quality, durable, well made and beneficial to my beloved pet. I feel very confident in saying this bed has without a doubt improved my dogs quality of life and has probably extended his life as well. I could not be happier with it.

    Worth the money
Worth the money. I bought this for my elderly dog who weighed about 70 pounds. I have continued to use it for the last seven years after he passed with many many dogs (about 30) passing through our house as Foster’s. Most of them over 100 pound Great Danes. It has held up beautifully

    Back for more
I just made a second purchase of this bed, but I don’t think I reviewed it the first time around. I bought the first one in July of 2014, and it is practically as good as new. I have a dog with incontinence problems, so I also bought both a second cover and two waterproof liners so I could rotate them out without having to wait until the covers were washed. This is a huge expense but there are not a lot of beds out there that provide the option for replacement covers and waterproof liners, and it looks to be worth it so far.A bed the size I need is pretty much impossible to wash, so the removable covers and the water protection is a must. The previous beds from a different company I had were comfy, over 100 dollars each, and lasted ten months before they started to deteriorate to the point I felt they needed to be replaced, not to mention, not being waterproof. At that price, the quality was actually pretty good overall, but far inferior to the Big Barker, primarily due to the quality of the cover. My dog is a scratcher, and that is not a problem with this cover. The quality of the foam is also better in comparing it to my previous bed, though to be honest, the cheaper version’s foam has held up pretty well, as it should at that price anyway. It’s just that I have had to hand wash the foam, the cover was a royal pain to put on, and now is pretty much torn up, and I am not a seamstress to make new ones. They have been relegated to staying at a relative’s house for weekend visits to try to get some more use out of them.In contrast, the Big Barker foam is in great shape after a year and a half of use. I would say these are more like a fairly firm mattress instead of one that you sink into, and it took a while for my dogs to decide it was soft enough. I don’t think there’s been any appreciable flattening, though I guess I’ll be able to tell more when I get the new one for comparison. In addition to incontinence issues, I have had to deal with other unpleasant incidents that I am going to refrain from describing, and the waterproof cover has protected the foam completely so far, even during what I can only call the great floods that have occurred a few times. (I am optimistic that we have recently found the right combination of medicines, by the way.) More than once I have taken the covers off dreading what condition I would find the foam in, only to be pleasantly surprised that it survived unscathed. The main cover itself is very good fabric, so it retards the moisture some itself, and the inner waterproof cover has done the trick. It is fabric, and not plastic, so of course it can’t be 100% waterproof, but my experience so far has had the foam 100% protected. I try to wash them sparingly since I feel like repeated washing might reduce it’s ability to resist water, but so far, so good! Note that this does not come with the waterproof liner; it is an additional expense, but at the price of the bed, I think it is worth it to provide the added protection even without the kind of issues I have faced. The outer covers, as I said, have also held up well. In a moment of gastric discomfort, my dog was biting on things to try to relieve her distress and tore a small hole on one of the covers on the corner of the bolster. That’s the only damage that has occurred, and a determined chewer could of course do more, but this really is a tough cover. It doesn’t look brand new due to washing and doggy living, but it still looks good. I never seem to be able to get the cover situated right the first time when I change them out; in fact right now it is actually upside down on the bed because laziness, but when I do change them, they are relatively easy to change; there’s none of the struggling and pushing and straining like there often is with foam covers. The large size does make it awkward, but it is still easily manageable for me alone if I just could remember which side is up!That brings me to why I got a second one, which is for my second dog who has been sleeping on something else by preference, but has really been trying to take a turn on the Barker lately to the point I feel he needs one for himself. I bought the first with an eye to getting a second if it worked out, and the time has come. I have spent so much money on a succession of inferior beds with all kinds of padding that did not do more than a welcome mat would. The prices of the beds kept creeping up, but the durability just wasn’t there. As these large dogs age, their joints really are going to need some protection to be comfortable, so the considerable expense of these beds is offset by not needing to replace them every six months to a year. My dogs will have to get a lifetime of use from them to make the expense justifiable, but I have no reason to expect that won’t happen.

Very quick prompt service. I ordered on Bank Holiday Weekend, and was here on the next working day tuesday to the UK. It was very well packaged, and came with unpacking instructions. My 10 year old Staffie, has taken to this bed really well, when in the past he has been uncertain of new beds. This bed is at the higher budget range, but worth every penny, as he has slept in it, very well every night, and has often been retiring to it during the day, which is unheard of for him! The information that has also been provided with this is very helpful, and looks very easy to clean for the future. I would highly recommend this product to any dog lover, and especially for the older larger breed. Thanks again to Eric, Matt and Team, you have been a pleasure to deal with.

Our 8-yr old Shepherd has begun to display symptoms of arthritis, and we worried that his normal dog bed was not providing much support or comfort. An online search for orthopedic dog beds kept turning up recommendations for Big Barker, so we bit the bullet on the price, and ordered one. The bed is terrific — firm enough that the foam doesn’t collapse under his weight, but still soft and supportive. It took a couple of days for the dog to figure out the best way to get in and out of the bed, as it is a very different feeling than a typical cotton batting-filled bed, but he got the hang of it. We have already recommended the bed to friends with senior pups.

Yes these beds are expensive but well worth the money! I bought the Big Barker bed with headrest for my 2.5 yr old 85 lb lab mix. She had TPLO surgery and it is helping her recover tremendously. She had bedsores that are now healing since she has been using it. It is a firm bed, no doubt, but that’s what I think she likes about it. I have a softer bed for her as well (different, cheaper brand) so that she can choose whichever one she likes; 90% of the time she chooses the Big Barker bed. I would highly recommend this product. She really likes the headrest so I am glad I paid the extra money for that model.

I bought this product for my Labrador, who suffers from arthritis in the spine. She took to it immediately and even uses the pillow! The cover is easy to clean. I use sticky roll and a damp cloth if I need to.I have not washed the cover as I protect it with a blanket in the winter and a cool sheet in the summer. I air it outside once a month and also vacuum it.Wish the manufactures would make funky fitted sheets for it as well.My girl would highly recommend it! I got the 7″ as she is a big lab.I have had this bed since May 2017 and it is still in excellent condition. I have not washed the cover as I protect it with a blanket. I air it outside once a month and also vacuum it. Really worth the money – one of my best buys ever!
