Nylak Otter –
Fine for play with small dogs or as a soft tug for puppies.
I probably should have assumed that this toy wouldn’t be very sturdy considering it only cost $13, but I was hoping that I just tripped across a great deal. It is still a fine choice depending on your needs. The leather isn’t whole grain or even suede; it feels like PU at best. It has a pleasantly soft texture, but isn’t very durable. The stuffing is just basic fluff and doesn’t give much grip but is a nice and gentle feel for puppy mouths. The main tug body is double stitched so it doesn’t fall apart right away. This stood up for about 5 quick training/play/assessment sessions with prospective bitework puppies before some of the material started to weaken and some stitches fell out. It may be better suited as just a tug and toss toy used for playtime for smaller adult dogs or as a positive reinforcement tool for sport dogs that enjoy brief tugging as a reward.

Somewhat Disappointing
I regularly use tugs similar to this for training my pups and I was excited to get this leather tug for a different and maybe gentler texture on them. I have previously used jute or linen and these sometimes make my dog’s gums bleed (if we’ve been working hard). I thought this one might be a good change. This tug is… questionable leather. It is not very durable and if it’s real leather it is a single layer and rather thin. My dogs have great “out” commands and control and this tug has started to come apart within a couple of training sessions. I actually thought this tug would be decent because I recently got a set of 4 linen tugs of the same size for about 20 bucks. I think this tug might be ok for dogs who are less serious than mine about bite work, ha ha, or puppies.
