It’s causing my cat to eat slower & stop when he’s had enough. The price is right. Read more…
This is the second of two lick trays I selected to try specifically for one of my cats.A little background: I rescued two sibling cats. One vomits quite a bit. I wonder if that depends on how quickly he scarfs down his food. He is also overweight. So, I decided to try using a licking tray to affect how quickly and how much he eats in one sitting. I also hope this will cause him to give up due to the cost-benefit factor if he’s really had enough and come back to finish when he’s hungry again. This tray is a little larger than the other one I’m trying. I measured it at about 10.5″ X 10.5″. It’s square-ish, with the corners rounded. Like the other one, this tray has four quadrants. But, this one has only two different designs—two quadrants of each design. Like the other one, this one is made of silicone. It is dishwasher-safe and doesn’t scoot across the floor while my cat licks it. On both, there are suction cups on the bottom that aid in keeping the tray in place, though I haven’t needed to be sure those are secure to the floor. It already stays in place as it is.The design of the quadrants on this tray is much more shallow than at least a couple of the areas on the other one I have. Two of the matching areas have smaller rectangles in the design. The other two matching quadrants have a bit larger rectangles–still not large by any means.Of particular note, this tray was significantly less expensive than the other one at the time of this review. It also has a collapsible cup in the middle, a toothbrush-type cleaning brush, and a little spatula. My “scarfer” cat on this one also ate down to a certain depth. Digging out the soft food that had been left below that depth in the rectangles would have been more difficult, but his smaller little sister came along to help him out with that a bit.I like both trays that I’m trying out, but I personally like this one a little better. However, it may not be the right one for my cat. It’s somewhat larger than the other one and has a more rounded look. The collapsable cup is a nice feature. I thought the food areas on this one had designs that would be more advantageous to how my larger cat eats. But it looks like the tray with the larger, deeper designs might work out better. He doesn’t keep digging below the design level on either. So, the other tray with the deeper designs may just simply be much easier for me to dig out the remaining soft food for him to finish later. (Normally, he would eat it all pretty rapidly until it’s gone and want another serving not long after.)Both trays that I’m trying have the desired effect of getting him to eat slower and stop eating when he’s had enough. With the smaller cat coming along to dig more out of the smaller designs, this one might work out perfectly. But my guess is that I’ll end up using the one with the deeper and larger designs more. I originally thought that design might be better for a larger dog, but it might also work better for my cat.I like and plan to keep both of the silicon lick trays that I selected. Both work for what I want to achieve. It will take quite a bit more time to determine if slowing down my cat’s eating helps with his semi-frequent vomiting and weight issues. Time will tell. But the better design for you depends on how your pet eats.I hope this review provided you with some insight into whether this tray or a different design would work better for you.I plan to update this review as circumstances warrant, but using a lick tray seems to be helping so far.I hope this helps you with your decision.
