This will transform your relationship with your dog
I am amazed by how well the approach and methods in this book have worked. My very energetic 10 month old Standard Poodle responds beautifully to this gentle and respectful training. Truthfully, the training has been at least as much for me as for my dog. Learning how to reward the behaviors I wish to see repeated, and to recognize how I’ve been inadvertently rewarding the wrong behaviors has made all the difference. Has saved me hundreds of dollars I’d have spent on classes, and I’m getting better results. If you want to fully experience the joy of having a dog as your friend who can go everywhere with you, read this.

easy, quick read that is extremely helpful!
as a dog trainer, i’m always looking for books to recommend to my clients, which will also teach me something new/interesting.grisha’s book succeeds in both cases. grisha has an easy, conversational style which makes this book a joy to read. her training techniques and philosophy are made very clear, and are easy to follow.she gives interesting examples of how to teach particular skills/cues, and has some new, innovative ideas to share (especially in dealing with the ever so complicated issue of dog reactivity).i also greatly appreciate her courage and honesty in discussing coercive training techniques and pointing out why they do not work, and cause pain to our beloved dogs. something that some other trainers/writers often “pussy foot” around. it’s nice to see that grisha doesn’t hold back.i highly recommend this book for professionals, dog enthusiasts, and doggie “rookies” alike.

I am a better trainer now!
This is an easy read for anyone (including beginners) wanting to train or change their dog’s behavior in a kind way. I ordered it with Grisha Stewart’s other book, Behavior Adjustment Training. It explains how dogs learn and the different training methods for beginners and gives many ways that a pro can improve their game.

Kind but effective approach to dog training
This is probably my most favorite doggy training reference. I am a new dog owner and was kind of overwhelmed with so many different approaches. I want my dog to be happy and well behaved but do not want to be an authoritarian drill sergeant of an owner. This book’s title “ahimsa” means “non-harming” and it does give the dog respect as a being who deserves to be happy and feel safe too! I have followed her advice and perspective on dog ownership and training and my sweet gal Bella is very happy and well-behaved with no poor manners! Thank you Grisha!

Perfect get started guide for you and your home companion
When I got this book home I started by handing it off to my husband and making him read it. “Why?” you ask. Well I’m a dog trainer, have been for several years, and I needed someone who could read it from the other side i.e. someone who really has only ever heard of “operant conditioning” or “positive reinforcement”, but really doesn’t KNOW it. Now don’t get me wrong, he ‘gets it’, but he doesn’t train our two dogs (he’s generally considered the “Great underminer”).He read it and gave it two thumbs up, so then I read it.This book is a fantastic sampler book that I now hand out to all of my new clients. I covers everything you need to know to get you started with your new dog, without getting bogged down in a massive amount of science. It’s ONLY a 100+ pages, BUT in the 100+ pages you get amazing value.

    Definite MUST HAVE book!
This book is a must have for every dog owner. Every puppy should go home with this book, as should every rescue and shelter dog. Grisha Stewart has done a fabulous job of simplifying learning theory so that even the most novice trainer can understand and apply the force-free training methods that give long-lasting results, rather than provide a temporary fix. Behavior isn’t just stopped, it is replaced with a more desirable behavior that promotes a healthier relationship between dog and owner.I send a copy of this book home with every client. Those who actually read the book and follow the training methods notice improvements in their dogs much faster than those who don’t, and their dogs are happier and more eager to learn!DEFINITELY BUY AND IMPLEMENT!

I am a dog trainer and I find this book does help. Gives you a different look on training. Highly recommend it to any level of trainer

  12. EJA

A great book for a’ll dog owners. If you want to understand you dog better, change an unwanted behaviour or teach something new, this book will be a great help. It’s a very accessible read and very worth buying as like me you will probably find you read it more than once and may return to some sections many times. Also useful for the professional trainer who will probably find themselves recommending it to their clients. A great combination of information and accessibility.
